My colleague has donated his Ellert to the local car museum, Bornholms Automobilmuseum, just outside Aakirkeby.

He was a very early adopter of windpower, as he had a private windmill erected at his home, decades ago. The windmill has delivered energy to his house, company and car ever since. I can remember his enthusiasm, even over the windmills first technical breakdown, a cheap bearing that gave up, 25 years after it was established.

I had heard that his first electric car, a Danish produced Ellert, had been donated to the local carmuseum. I saw it parked outside today, when I drove by.

The Ellert is quite a funny invention, and many years I thought of getting one myself. Back when they were new they were pretty unpopular by the others on the road, as they didn’t have the most impressive top speed, and therefore had a tendency to hold up traffic.

However they are very simple pieces of technology, and they are rather charming.

It’s a one person (actually there is a rear viewing seat that fits a child behind the driver. The power comes from lead acid batteries mounted under the seat.

The Ellert was produced as an open cabriolet as well.
